Last Chance to Enroll Before Price Increases Next Spring

Do you remember the very first version of the Footwork Mastery Course that launched in 2014? Okay, you might not, but it was a small collection of tutorials for the one time payment of $37. Or you got it free when you signed up for a monthly subscription of Online Classes that delivered some choreography or a “move of the week” —similar to what I taught any drop-in student in my weekly in-person studio classes. By “drop-in” I mean it didn’t matter whether you had never danced a day in your life before, or had been taking my classes for years, you were just going to walk into my class and be surprised by the level of difficulty. There was no progression to the classes, no clear beginning or end, no real direction to guide the growth or development of my students.

In 2018, my partner My-Linh took one look at the Footwork Mastery Course and determined that it needed to be a year-long program. I laughed at the idea and explained that there’s not enough material in Footwork Mastery to last a whole year… I mean, maybe if I really tried, I could stretch it out to last a couple months, but why would anyone even want that? She raised an eyebrow and asked, “So you’re telling me you can teach your students to dance like you, in only a couple months?” That made me pause and think about everything my students would need to know and to practice, in order to be able to freestyle like me, and the easiest, most efficient and effective shortcuts I could create in order for them to get there.

From then on, we spent months researching, interviewing the students that had taken the first version of my online classes to determine what students actually wanted and needed. And based on that, combined with My-Linh’s experience and knowledge of “dance pedagogy” (from her masters degree in dance), we redesigned and reconstructed the whole online course from the ground up, in a way that no one else teaching dance online even imagined.

To my amazement (and this is the only part of this story that matters): the new course worked much better than the previous! The difference I’ve seen in students’ progress since we made these changes to the online course has been mind-boggling. I mean, you’ve seen some of those progression reels, right?

I’m giving you all this background information to say: although I’m raising the price of my online course, for the first time in 6 years, I will never, ever raise my prices just to raise them.

Don’t worry, I definitely won’t be doubling it like I did in 2018. But I will, once again, work on improving and adding to the online course based on the feedback I’ve gotten over the years from students who have expressed a desire to learn more about the history and cultural context of house dance. I’m actually very proud of my students for caring about this, because house is more than a technique —it’s a whole culture, a whole community of real people and their collective story. Therefore I plan to incorporate new learning material to help my students understand the historical and cultural context of house dance, into and all throughout the 50 weeks of the upgraded online course. I also have been studying up over the last few years on how to maintain and take care of those muscles and joints that are most prone to injury in house dance with strengthening and conditioning exercises. And I want to help my students prevent such injuries, especially as I’ve gotten older and have seen the wear and tear that can happen without proper care, which is why self-care will be another new element of the new, upgraded course.

If you have stuck around me for a while now, you might have noticed that I can never go for long without finding new ways to drastically improve and grow. I know raising the price always comes with the risk of losing some students. But that’s how important it is to me, to consistently deliver what my most dedicated students have come to rely on me for: the highest quality and most comprehensive instruction in freestyle house dance that can be found anywhere in the world.
